United We Stand: Indians need to work together to bring about change

So, we are in 2010. Remember the presentation, plans , articles, studies and forecasts from a couple of decades ago- many of them had titles like Vision 2010, India super Power by 2010, Marching Towards 2010, etc. This is one of those years by when things needed to have been done. But no, we are nowhere near some of those forecasts that were made. Conveniently, those forecasts have been shifted to another nice, elegantly rounded year like 2020, or in case of a few over-eager forecasters, to 2050.
In fact, by 2050, we are supposed to be richer than western countries, a wonder created by Excel spreadsheets and research houses that are the equivalents of sensational TV channels. Such forecasts assume current growth rates to perpetuity, ignore the low base effect, and do not consider the fact that most of the economic growth is having minimal impact on the majority of Indian people. It also ignores the fact that we don’t have the basics of almost any developed economy right- an effective legal system; fiscal prudence; disincentives for corruption; intellectual property right; less government interference in business; incentive for capital flows and an education system that is designed to reward talent. No, these thing are too boring and cumbersome to figure out when all you have to do is drag those Excel cells until India overtakes the west. If it can happen in my spreadsheet, it will happen in real life.
Get real, we are in 2010, and we are still a long way from being a developed country. We have nearly 20% food inflation; almost all government office are corrupt; the legal system is designed to drag things out and our politicians care little about changing this as the people don’t vote of these factors. There are a significant number of educated, and if one may say, enlightened people who want performance and nothing else. Yet, most people in India still vote on caste, traditions, personalities or dynasty.
But we already know al that , you will say. Can’t you be less morbid, at least in the New Year? It’s a new decade, after all.
I am not being morbid. I am telling you what it will take in this decade to change all this. I am telling you what it will take in this decade to change all this. I am telling you the real set of numbers to focus on. The number of votes it will take so that this set of enlightend people, sprinkled across the country, and hence, not a votebank yet, begins to matter. Using heavy approximation for simplicity, India has around 600 million voters, a staggering number (all data from Election commission website). Half the people do not vote, thereby reducing the actual vote count to 300 million. However, if you see the difference between the winning candidate’s votes and that of the runner up), and add these up for the 530 odd constituencies, the difference is only 40 million votes. That is, these 40 million votes decide the winners of all seats. In fact, if half of these 40 million people switched their votes for the second guy, that person could have won in all constituencies. And half of 40 million is only 20 million- the number of votes that decides who will be in power at the top.
This 20 million is a far more mangeable number to deal with. It is roughly the readership of this newspaper. It is also just over three percent of all registered voters, the population of two big metros, the theatrical viewership of a bollywood blockbuster and a little more than the current penetration of networking sites. It’s not an impossible target, if that is the number of enlightened people we need.
However, there are some assumption in this. For one, the enlightened people have to be united and tightly knit. We may all care for country, but we could be pulling in different directions. In most colleges across the country, the youth is engaged in community activities. However, they all have their own local issues. A group of students is working for more tree in Banglore; another set in Delhi wants to clean up pollution; an NGO in chhattisgarh wants better primary education…No doubt, these are fantastic causes, and the hard work done must be commended. However, this does not use our collective power-one that can swing the outcome of a national election.

That needs a common agenda in line with the founding principle of a modern progressive nation. The rest will follow. Once we are seen as a tight votebank, and a swing one at that, politicians will have no choice but to listen to us. It is great to be spread out as little sparks around the country, but if we can come together as a fireball, it is even better.
The Internet, college festivals, Inter-NGO networks are all opportunities to bring these sparks together. Slowly, this change is happening anyway. But we must hasten it-don’t ask what’s our cause. There are many well-intentioned people but they are just not stitched together into a votebank that matters yet.
And if we can make 2010 a year in which we decided to do that, build that 20 million votebank, then by 2020 those spreadsheets will finally begin to make sense.

Happy New Year!

REVOLUTIONARY LEADERS

REVOLUTIONARY LEADERS

BY
JIGEESHU JOSHI
CORE TEAM MEMBER
INDIA VISION 2020 TEAM

Few days back i came across an article about Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. I dont kn whether u are aware of these names. Che Guevara is one of the greatest revolutionary leader of all times. Fidel castro is a revolutionary leader of cubian revlolution and is still the president of cuba( he might have resigned now because of old age)..but, he remained as prime minsiter and president of Cuba for as long as 50 years.

they are the true examples of revolutionary leaders. they transformed Cuba into a self reliant state and brought effective healthcare systems, low wealth inequalities, a stable government, and high literacy rate in Cuba.

Che Guevara is a role model, he went and did what revolutionaries are meant to do — fought and died for his beliefs." Guevara remains a beloved national hero to many in Cuba, where his image adorns the $3 cuban peso and school children begin each morning by pledging "We will be like Che". he is to Cuba what Mahatma Gandhi is to us.
when Che was 24, he went on a tour across south america and there he came across poverty, hunger and disease. Later with his firm determination to help the people of Latin america and his hard working attitude made him the most popular personalities of 20th century. he spread literacy and fought for poor and farmers to bring justice to them and eradicate exploitation by higher classes towards their subordinate.

Similiarly Fidel Castro is responsible for effective healthcare systems, low wealth inequalities, a stable government, and high literacy rate in Cuba which helped the country to develop with leaps and bounds.

They both together made Cuba a better place to live. Whether their legacy will be interpreted in a positive or negative light is frequently debated in political circles. they opposed the monopoly of America very strongly and has always criticized America for their domination and interference in International affairs. Because of their Anti- American attitude they are strongly crticized in western world but they will always be remembered as the great revolutionary leaders of all times.
What point i am trying to make is; we have a noble vision (India Vision 2020) but we are missing that fire to do public service and make India a better country to live in. I am very much inspired with these two personalities and i am sure that if you read about them, you too will be inspired. Like i mentioned Che Guevara traveled across Latin America just as we have travelled across India and we must now walk on his foot steps and start a revolution for the development of our beloved country INDIA. We have been given this wonderful opportunity to work for the welfare of our country and be called as the great revolutionaries of India.

so let us once again get together and try our best to transform india into a developed nation. it is challenge and let us accept it and live upto it.

Suddenly a spark has ignited inside me and so i am writing to you to share my views. I hope this will boost your confidence. I have supported you in your noble vision and will continue to do so. I have always appreciated your efforts. Let us take it more seriously and with our clear vision I am sure we could transform this country and take it towards the path of prosperity.
What is required is proper planning and then proper execution of that plan. It is difficult but not impossible.

A very inspiring, interesting and thought provoking speech by Shri Azim Premji

A very inspiring, interesting and thought provoking speech by Shri Azim Premji At the 37th Annual Convocation, IIM, Ahmedabad

While change and uncertainty have always been a part of life, what has been shocking over the last year has been both the quantum and suddenness of change. For many people who were cruising along on placid waters, the wind was knocked out of their sails. The entire logic of doing business was turned on its head. Not only business, but also every aspect of human life has been impacted by the change. What lies ahead is even more dynamic and uncertain. I would like to use this opportunity to share with you some of our own guiding principles of staying afloat in a changing world. This is based on our experience in Wipro. I hope you find them useful.

LESSON 1
Be alert for the first signs of change.
Change descends on every One equally; it is just that some realize it faster.
Some changes are sudden but many others are gradual. While sudden
changes get attention because they are dramatic, it is the gradual changes
that are ignored till it is too late. You must have all heard of story of the frog
in boiling water. If the temperature of the water is suddenly increased, the
frog realizes it and jumps out of the water. But if the temperature is very
slowly increased, one degree at a time, the frog does not realize it till it boils
to death. You must develop your own early warning system, which warns
you of changes and calls your attention to it. In the case of change, being
forewarned is being forearmed.

LESSON 2
Anticipate change even when things are going right."
Most people wait for something to go wrong before they think of change. It
is like going to the doctor for a check up only when you are seriously sick
or thinking of maintaining your vehicle only when it breaks down. The
biggest enemy of future success is past success. When you succeed, you
feel that you must be doing something right for it to happen. But when
the parameters for success change, doing the same things may or may
not continue to lead to success. Guard against complacency all the time.
Complacency makes you blind to the early signals from the environment
that something is going wrong.

LESSON 3
Always look at the opportunities that change represents.
Managing change has a lot to go with our own attitude towards it. It is
proverbial half-full or half empty glass approach. For every problem
that change represents, there is an opportunity lurking in disguise
somewhere. It is up to you to spot it before someone else does.

LESSON 4
Do not allow routines to become chains."
For many of us the routine. We have got accustomed to obstructs
change. Routines represent our own zones of comfort. There is a
sense of predictability about them. They have structured our time and
even our thought in a certain way. While routines are useful, do not
let them enslave you. Deliberately break out of them from time to time.

LESSON 5
Realize that fear of the unknown is natural.
With change comes a feeling of insecurity. Many people believe
that brave people are not afflicted by this malady. The truth is different.
Every one feels the fear of unknown. Courage is not the absence of fear
but the ability to manage fear without getting paralyzed. Feel the fear,
but move on regardless.

LESSON 6
Keep renewing yourself.
This prepares you to anticipate change and be ready for it when it comes.
Constantly ask yourself what new skills and competencies will be needed.
Begin working on them before it becomes necessary and you will have a
natural advantage. The greatest benefit of your education lies not only in
what you have learnt, but in working how to learn. Formal education is the
beginning of the journey of learning. Yet I do meet youngsters who feel that
they have already learnt all there is to learn. You have to constantly learn
about people and how to interact effectively with them. In the world of
tomorrow, only those individuals and organizations will succeed who have
mastered the art of rapid and on-going learning.

LESSON 7
Surround yourself with people who are open to change."
If you are always in the company of cynics, you will soon find yourself
becoming like them. A cynic knows all the reasons why something cannot
be done. Instead, spend time with people who have a "can-do" approach.
Choose your advisors and mentors correctly. Pessimism is contagious, but
then so is enthusiasm. In fact, reasonable optimism can be an amazing
force multiplier.

LESSON 8
Play to win..!!"
I have said this many times in the past. Playing to win is not the same as
cutting corners. When you play to win, you stretch yourself to your
maximum and use all your potential. It also helps you to concentrate
your energy on what you can influence instead of getting bogged down
with the worry of what you cannot change. Do your best and leave the
rest.

LESSON 9
Respect yourself. The world will reward you on your successes."
Success requires no explanation and failure permits none. But you need to respect yourself enough so that your self-confidence remains intact whether you succeed or fail. If you succeed 90 per cent of the time, you are doing fine. If you are succeeding all the time, you should ask yourself if you are taking enough risks. If you do not take enough risks, you may also be losing out on many opportunities. Think through but take the plunge. If some things do go wrong, learn from them. I came across this
interesting story some time ago:
Story
One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered up anyway it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and begin to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well and was astonished at what he saw. With every shovel of dirt that fell on his back, the donkey was doing some thing amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and totted off ! Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick is too not to get bogged down by it. We can get out of the deepest wells by not stopping. And by never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up !

LESSON 10
Never change: your core values."
In spite of all the change around you, decide upon what you will never change: your core values. Take your time to decide what they are but once you do, do not compromise on them for any reason. Integrity is one such value.

LESSON 11
We must remember that succeeding in a changing world is beyond just surviving.
It is our responsibility to create and contribute something to the world that has given us so much. We must remember that many have contributed to our success, including our parents and others from our society. All of us have a responsibility to utilize our potential for making our nation a better place for others, who may not be as well endowed as us, or as fortunate in having the opportunities that we have got. Let us do our bit, because doing one good deed can have multiple benefits not only for us but also for many others. Let me end my talk with a small story I came across some time back, which illustrates this very well.
Story
This is a story of a poor Scottish farmer whose name was Fleming. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby dog. He dropped his tools and ran to the dog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the boy from what could have been a slow and terrifying death. The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. "I want to repay you said the nobleman. " Yes," the farmer replied proudly. "I'll make you a deal. Let me take your son and give him a good education. If he's anything like his father, he'll grow to a man you can be proud of you." And that he did. In time, Farmer Fleming's son graduated from St.Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known through-out the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the Nobleman's son was stricken with pneumonia. What saved him? Penicillin. This is not the end. The nobleman's son also made a great contribution to society. For the nobleman was non other than Lord Randolph Churchill. and his son's name was Winston Churchill. Let us use all our talent, competence and energy for creating peace and happiness for the nation. Change is the Only thing that will Never change. So better adapt to it." Change is Universal Change is Permanent. Be ever willing to Change.. For, change alone leads you to success and happiness!!! If one desires a change, one must be that change before that change can take place

Future of Science and Technology

We stand at the beginning 21 Century. In the past century the scientific technological development accelerated itself ever more strongly and our environments affected. What will bring us the future?
Today the development of is initiated how we live and work in the future, how old we become, as healthy we to remain or which products and achievement we to use be able. All crucially on it, as depends India succeeds, a prominent place in a global knowledge society securing itself. Basic condition for it is both massive commitment into the production of new knowledge and innovative technologies and in their application and utilization. Also and technology made possible it for India after the freedom to develop to one of the prominent nations of the world. But our future in crucially on it, as it succeeds, the potential of new technologies to open and leading products on the markets of the world sell.
One goal is it to place the citizens and particularly young people a basic understanding of it which topics will affect each other in the international research to developed particularly dynamically and promisingly at present and in which way these in the coming ten years our life. Many of these developments are not well-known the citizens or only in beginning.
Here is to clarify, before which challenge not only India but whole mankind stands. It looks for answers to the global questions: How will we live with the climate change? From where do we get in the future our energy? Can the Earth nourish all us? Other questions concern the everyday life of each particular: Do the genes determine our future? Do Computers Think soon like humans? Will robots lead our household? Can we master an interlaced world? The future is already today arranged.
